Monetizing Your Blog
By Michael Lundberg | July 5, 2007
So now that I’ve spent the last 6 weeks playing with my blog, including: changing the themes, adding a couple of plugins, adding several widgets (you don’t think that I have too many, do you?), and adding the ever-present Google AdSense, I’m starting to wonder how much money I could make off this. Granted, I’m not really expecting to supplement my income with anything substantial, but it would be kinda neat if this blog could pay for itself. I use AN Hosting (www.anhosting.com) to host my blog, which costs roughly $7/month. I initially thought that it would be trivial to make $7/month off of a blog, but after reading the following post (http://alexking.org/blog/2007/05/22/monetization) on AlexKing.org (www.alexking.org), I’m not so sure. Alex offers an excellent point of view on a couple of ad services and explains what worked best for him.
Does anyone else know of any good articles comparing the various ad services? If so, please post them below in the comments.
We’ll just have to see what happens when I finally start promoting this dumb thing. At the time of this post, if you’re reading this post, it’s because you somehow stumbled across it or Googled it.
Now that I have my own blog with ads, I’m feeling very Web 2.0-ish and another feeling that I can’t quiet put my finger on. Wait… yes, it’s “dorkism.”
In case you’re wondering how I found Alex’s website (besides the fact that I spend an unhealthy amount of time on the internet), he recently wrote an interesting article about how he managed to get a functioning iPhone without paying the AT&T service. The solution is simple, and I wonder if Apple may try to discourage this by disabling this “feature” later, though if they did, I think it would backfire on them. Anyway, you can find that article here.

There also things like payperpost and reviewme that will pay for blog posts, that might be something for you to look into.

@ Becky - Thanks for the comments. I’ll check out both of those sites out in more detail. I have to admit, I’m skeptical of the pay for post idea, as many people in the blogosphere consider it spam. Still, it may be a viable solution for some to ramp up their subscription rate and get noticed.
You have an interesting website and I can definitely see that you have content that is useful to beginning bloggers like myself. I’ve subscribed to it with under my Bloglines blogroll (http://www.bloglines.com/public/mwlundberg). I’ve placed it under “Blogging Sites”.
Thanks,

Cheers for the add Michael.
Pay for Post / TLA / ReviewMe don’t really have decent pay outs for the small fish or people starting off blogging. I think John Chow mentioned recently something about a wordpress plugin that allows you to sell your own text link ads.

@ Becky (PreBlogging) - I did a quick Google search and found John Chow’s article here:

I will definitely have to check out the plugins he mentioned. Having recently upgraded my Wordpress installation, the next thing I’ll be looking for are new plugins. John Chow’s blog is definitely another one that I’ll be adding to my blogroll. Thanks again for the good information!
Thanks,
Michael Lundberg
