Web 2.0 Invitations Galore!
By Michael Lundberg | August 15, 2007
This is my third attempt to give away the many invitation-only website invitations that I have. Is that sentence proper English? Probably not, but I don’t care at this point. Here’s the deal - if you want an invitation, leave me a comment below along the site(s) you’re interested in and your email address (obfuscate it, to avoid the spambots). First come, first served.
One other thing - if you liked this post, please subscribe to my blog by clicking on the subscribe icon on the right or by clicking here.
Ok, here’s a quick low-down on the invitations that I have:
Natuba (http://www.natuba.com) - 3 invites left
What can I say about this site that hasn’t already been said in Dwight’s article? Hush Labs is from Houston as well, so you just *know* that they’re good people. Give it a try, I think you’ll like it.
WeeWar (http://www.weewar.com) - unlimited invitations
This site is *so* addictive. Let me send you an invitation and let you try it… It’s like digital crack cocaine. Trust me on this. Don’t ask for an invitation unless you have copious amounts of free time. After I send you an invitation, you have to reciprocate with an invitation to “war”. My userid is “mwlundberg”. Actually, you don’t have to, but I’m always up for a new match.
Pownce (http://www.pownce.com) - 8 invitations left
This social networking tools is very similar to Twitter, except it facilitates file transfers between users, sending links to other users, and person-to-person communications. I really like this site and have been using it quite a bit since joining. If you pick none of the other sites (besides WeeWar and Natuba), pick this one.
Scrybe (http://www.iscrybe.com) - unlimited invitations
This site is a little strange. It’s supposed to provide online organizational tools such as shareable calendars, powerlists, and thoughpads. Maybe I just haven’t played with it enough, or maybe I’m just not that organized, but in the immortal words of Tom Hanks in “Big”, “I don’t get it.”
Doostang (http://www.doostang.com) - unlimited invitations
This is an invitation-only career community started at Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. It looks ok, but I’m not really looking for a new job, so I haven’t spent much time trying to build my social network in Doostang. I primarily use Linkedin for business networking (btw, send me a connection request, if you’re on Linkedin). It seems very geared towards new college graduates, but I’m sure there’s more senior positions available as well.
Bubbletop (http://www.bubbletop.com) - 5 invitations
Here’s another one that I just don’t understand. It’s sort of a “My Portal” style destination site, with a little social networking thrown in, to boot. It doesn’t seem like this site offers anything special, but admittedly, I haven’t spent much time with it.
Fairtilizer (http://www.fairtilizer.com) - 4 invitations
I’m always leery of uploading songs to any website, but that’s how this site works. You upload songs, which are reviewed by editors, who make sure that the copyright holder has approved it’s use. Users can log in, get song recommendations, and listen to songs posted by other members. The site looks legit, but I’m just over cautious when it comes to stuff like this.
Gleamd (http://www.gleamd.com) - unlimited invitations
This is a fairly interested site. The idea is that you submit people, along with a short biography or comments about them. As other people add comments or facts, the popularity of that person increases, and they rise to the top of the list. Think of it as Digg for people.
Yumondo (http://www.yumondo.com) - 11 invitations
I like this site, but I haven’t really explored it to the fullest. It appears to be very similar to MySpace in that it’s heavy on the social networking. Yumondo bills itself as the “Urban Stylesharing” site. You sort of organize and meet friends in different cities and locations. It’s headquartered in Berlin, and seems to have a bit of a slant towards European visitors. Maybe that’s just me, though.
Spock (http://www.spock.com) - 99 invitations
This site is somewhat similar to Gleamd, except it’s more of a tool for locating people. But instead of adding to a public profile, like in Gleamd, you tag public profiles with certain bits of information, like “Houston”, “technology”, or “Apple”. You get the picture. It does have a nice, clean and minimalist interface, which I really like.
Moola (http://www.moola.com) - 3 invitations
This site is somewhat addictive, especially since it advertises that you can win real money by playing it. The premise is that the site, Moola, gives you 2 cents. Moola then automatically pairs you up with others that have the same amount of money and you play a quick (lasts about 3 minutes) game over the internet and the winner takes the loser’s money. They want you to keep playing and doubling your money until you cash it out. Interesting note: if you double 2 cents 27 times, you get move than $1M.
Babelgum (http://www.babelgum.com) - unlimited invitations
This tool, which is a Windows-only download, uses P2P technology to stream licensed video content to your desktop. The video quality (ie compression) is good, but there isn’t as much appealing content here.
Joost (http://www.joost.com) - unlimited invitations
This tool is similar to Babelgum, but is offered as a Windows and Mac download. It also seems to have much better content than Babelgum. The user interface leaves much to be desired, but they appear to be slowly addressing that. I would try Joost before Babelgum. Heck - try ‘em both, they’re both free!
8apps (http://www.8apps.com) - 47 invitations
Claims to be the social networking site for productive people. 8apps allows you to create workflows and assign tasks to other people (in your network, I would assume). I haven’t played with this one much, so I can’t say much else about it. Oh yeah, the interface isn’t that great.
(Update 1) Dopplr (http://www.dopplr.com) - 9 invitations
This is another social networking site aimed squarely at frequent travelers. I’ve wanted to play with this one more, but it’s down frequently. See my other post on Mr. Uptime (here).
(Update 2) If you liked this post, you might want to check out this post for a free invite to “i’m in like with you.”

Thanks for the Linkedin invite as well! I’m always interested in expanding my network, especially with anyone in the IT industry.

@ Doug Moore - I just sent you invitations to Natuba and Doostang. I’m starting to like the idea of Natuba more and more. I think that any tool that aggregates all of my social networking and blog sites is probably a good thing. Feel free to post about your experiences with it (including your site address) here.
Also - let me know if you want me to introduce you to the drug otherwise known as WeeWar. Remember - the first hit is free.
Thanks,
Michael Lundberg
August 17th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
@ Daniel Slaughter - Information on how to begin your addiction to WeeWar is waiting in your email box. Once you get set up, send me an invitation. I’ll go a few rounds with you!

Could I have an invite for 8apps, Doostang, and Bubbletop?
I’m a new reader of your blog!
August 22nd, 2007 at 5:48 pm
@ Aditi - I’ve just sent you all three invitations! After you’ve played around with the sites and services, feel free to come back and comment on them. I’d be very curious to hear your comments on 8app and Bubbletop. I just don’t understand their target market or what they’re trying to provide, but I’m willing to be persuaded by a reader sharper than myself.
Let me know if you change your mind on WeeWar. I’m always happy to introduce readers to how the game’s played.
Thanks for hitting my site!

Hey,
Could you please send me an invite to iscrybe?
Many thanks!
September 5th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
@ Amit - I just sent you an invitation to iScrybe. Scrybe is definitely one of the strangest of the Web 2.0 apps that I’ve looked at. In my opinion, it suffers from usability issues. I just don’t find it very intuitive. Come back after you’ve played with it for a while and let me know what you think about it.
Thanks,

Wow - Scrybe musts be getting popular. Your invitation request is the second one this week. I’m quite happy to oblige. Hopefully, someone will send me some feedback on Scrybe. I feel like I’m just missing something here.
Thanks,
Michael Lundberg

I would like it very much if you could send a couple invites. They would be to both Weewar and Moola. I find the idea of Moola very entertaining…sort of an online pyramid scheme. Weewar is just something I have been hearing about for a while now and would love to give it a go. BTW thanks a lot for the offer Michael its a cool thing to do…Wish me luck….Chad
September 7th, 2007 at 8:24 am
@ Chad - I’ve just sent you an email with instructions on how to get onto WeeWar. Be sure to send me an invitation to war once you get online. There’s a new feature where you can add me as a friend in WeeWar, too. Welcome to the drug that is called WeeWar!
The Moola invitation should be on it’s way! Make yourself some money!
Let me know if you don’t receive the invitations!

@ Cory - I’ve just sent you a doostang invitation. Please let me know if you don’t get it. Although it’s not a job website, I’ve found that I get a lot of job offers through Linkedin. I consider it the Facebook for professionals. You should consider creating a Linkedin profile as well. If you do, send me an invitation!
Thanks,

@ Alba - No problem! Sorry for the slow reply, but I’ve been on the road for the last couple of days and I’m just now catching up on my emails. I just sent you the Pownce invitation. Let me know if you don’t get it.
If you like online games (I checked out your site), be sure to check out WeeWar: http://weewar.com/?referrer=mwlundberg
Let me warn you - it’s very addictive!
Lastly, I did a review of Pownce, which you can find here:

@ Paul - I see that you’ve already received my Fairtilizer invitation and joined. Let me know what you think of that one. Like many of the new music sites, I’m leery of any site that doesn’t appear to have major label backing. I can’t tell that Fairtilizer has that, but it’s still an interesting site.
Thanks,

@ Chris - Consider it done! Your Doostang invitation has been sent. I’ve never received many job offers through Doostang, but that’s probably because I haven’t developed my Doostang network. I do however, receive offers regularly through Linkedin (www.linkedin.com). If you’re looking to make a move, I would suggest signing up for Linkedin as well. I have a large linkedin network (almost 1,600 direct connections). If you send me a connection invitation, I’ll accept it (mwlundberg{atz}gmail[dot]com). Thank you. I received it and have been trying iScrybe out. As far as the calendaring system goes, it’s a very slick interface with a good reminder system. Fun to play with, but I can’t see corporations using it as a professional calendaring system like they highlight in the demo. I haven’t played with the ThoughtPad section yet.
May 20th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
@Joshua - I’m working on a review of Scyrbe, but your comments basically echo my thoughts. Look for my post on that soon.

ditto, and with no way to sync with my phone or PDA even via outlook or windows calendar it strikes out for me too. thats a shame cause it is a nice interface.
