Free Invitation to “i’m in like with you”
By Michael Lundberg | September 16, 2007
Ok readers… Here’s a new Web 2.0 site for your viewing pleasure. I originally found this site from someone on Pownce, who posted a link to this very interesting promotional video (http://static.iminlikewithyou.com/preview.html). Note that the video is fairly large and might take a second or two to load. If you can watch that video and not be even a little bit intrigued about what the site has to offer, then my hat’s off to you! By the way, the video is super-secret and I’m not supposed to show anyone the video unless they’re totally hot. I assume all my readers are totally hot, so click away. When I say totally hot, I don’t mean the dudes… ahem. Let’s just continue and get to the good stuff, shall we?
From what I’ve read, “i’m in like with you,” (abbreviated to “iilwy”) is a new dating and flirting website. If you haven’t read my “about” page, then you might not know that I’m already married with kids, so I clearly don’t have a need to be browsing around a dating website.
For obvious reasons, I haven’t spent a lot of time clicking around this site or trying out any of its features. As far as I can tell here’s how it works:
Games: Members offer up games for other members to play. Even though it’s called a game, what it really is is a silly question, meant to find potential dates or friends. Some of the questions (I mean, “games”) include:
- What’s the best prank you you’ve ever pulled?
- What’s your favorite food and why?
- One day I shall _____. (fill in the blank)
- What are you best at?
- How much is too much?
You get the picture. Like the site description says, it’s like flirting, except over the internet. Other members answer your question (opps, there I go again, I mean “game”) and attach a bid of points to the response. I guess the bid is meant to give the game host an idea of how strong you want to be introduced to them. At the conclusion of the game (games are time limited, usually by a couple of days), the host can select one of the top five bidders. What happens to the points? According to the site:
Your points remain locked up until the game is closed and the game host chooses a winner. When the game host chooses a winner, all the bids are added up and the winner and the game host get half of those points back. The winner also gets back the number of points that he bid. The other people bidding on the game lose a percentage of their points.
At that point, the winner and the host can communicate freely via email, sms, etc. The site even claims that you can call each other without revealing email addresses or phone numbers. Emails that you send to your contacts are sent by a site address (@iilwy.com) to mask your real address. If you want to actually talk with the person, you dial into a number (212, a NYC area code number) and select from a list of your available contacts. The iilwy phone system calls the other person (masking your number in the process). The recepient picks up and listens to a message about who is calling. They can then accept the call, tell you that they’re busy, or even block them. It seems like a pretty ingenious system.
Points: So what’s this whole thing about points? When you initially join, you get a bank of points. I started with 800 points. You can get additional points in a variety of ways like logging in each day, answering pop-up questions from the site (things like “what is your favorite color?” and “do you go to work in a suit?”), and adding pictures. You also get points for inviting friends, but right now I only have one invite to give away.
From what I’ve seen of the site, it seems pretty cool in a non-geeky and non-desperate way. A couple of comments I have about the site:
- the site is totally free
- the site seems very easy to browse and use
- member invitations are very hard find
- the site claims that it will always be invitation only
- because the site is so limited, it’s hard to find other members that are close to you. For example, a quick search for female users in Houston found 2 members. You can play games with anyone, but what’s the point in corresponding with someone in Seattle if you live in Miami?
So how am I going to give away my one invitation? I don’t know. Leave me a comment (the better the post, the better the chance of me selecting you). Multiple comments are even better. You don’t even have to post a comment to this post. And yes, stroke my ego. It’s small, I promise. Subscribe to my rss feed. Digg this article or any of my other articles. Or StumbleUpon it. Whatever, just impress me.
The contest starts today (the evening of Sunday, September 16th). Let’s close it a week from today, the evening of Sunday, September 23rd at 10pm CST. May the best man (or woman) win!
