Nine Inch Nails is a Free Agent
By Michael Lundberg | October 8, 2007
Today, Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor (yes, I know that technically speaking, he is the band) announced that as of today, he is free and clear of any binding contracts with a record company. You can find Trent’s brief announcement here.
Just a last week, I happened to post about Trent’s comments to during a recent show in Australia that hinted at his disgust of record companies. Clearly, this is something that has been brewing for a while. His announcement is also very timely considering that Radiohead, another band without a record contract, is set to release their album on Wednesday, October 10th without any record company involvement (which I posted about yesterday). It remains to be seen if he’ll follow in their footsteps with a similarly interesting release plan. Will he also sell his music for whatever the fans want to pay for it? Only time will tell.
Nine Inch Nails is a band that I’ve had tremendous amount of respect and admiration of. Somehow Trent has managed to keep his music interesting and relevant, all while slightly re-inventing himself with each new release. In the past, it’s taken Trent anywhere from 4-5 years to release new material and his last two albums, “With Teeth” and “Year Zero” were released surprisingly close together. Hopefully, Trent won’t slow down his release schedule just because he doesn’t have a record label pushing him. Somehow, I don’t think it will. If anything, it’s likely to speed up. Also, he’s mentioned in the past that his record companies have held him back from releasing more explicit and outlandish videos. It’s frightening to think what he might come up with, without a record company to throttle his imagination.
Hopefully, we’ll see some exciting stuff from him soon. The Year Zero remix album is rumored to be scheduled for release on Tuesday, November 10th, 2007.
