Cloverfield is almost here!
By Michael Lundberg | December 21, 2007
I’ve been following this whole Cloverfield movie thing since I first heard about in on Ain’t It Cool News back in June. Rather than rehash all the sites and underground buzz about it, I’ll just point you to Wikipedia, which covers it in pretty good detail. Just in case you haven’t heard about Cloverfield, I should at least tell you that it’s a movie produced by JJ Abrams, who is also responsible for the wildly popular Lost and Alias TV shows. It also has something to do with an enormous creature attacking New York City. Think Godzilla, with a sprinkle of Lost (the TV series) and a heaping ladle of Blair Witch Project gravy. Ok, I have no idea what that description means, but the movie look really good. What’s driving people even crazier (myself included) is that it’s next to impossible to find any credible information about the movie.
There has been a teaser and a trailer released previously, but this little widget was released that allegedly shows the first 5 minutes of the movie. Early buzz on this movie has been good, and according to Ain’t It Cool News, some people associated with the movie have commented that they feel like they’re creating something really special with this movie. Like “Star Wars” special. Now that’s just sacrilege to me, but the movie does look cool and it’s coming out soon (1/18/08).
Now, I just figured out how to embed flash movies without messing up the rest of my post, so check out the first five minutes of Cloverfield, after the jump.
So, what do you think? Pretty cool, eh?

Yeah I can’t wait for this movie to come out, I wonder what this creature is going to look like? Not like Godzilla I hope!

@ Jon B - I’m torn between scouring the internet to find more information about the monster (what does it look like, what does it do, etc.) and just waiting to be surprised by the movie when it comes out.
I’m sure my curiosity will win out sooner or later. At this point, I’m relying on the producers to keep any and all pictures out of the media because I know that once they’re leaked, I’ll find them and look at them.
Luckily, we only have to wait it out for 2 more weeks…

I gave into temptation, and did a google search for ‘Cloverfield Monster’ but I didn’t really find anything of use… They are being pretty secretive about it.

This movie looks freakin sweet! I seriously cannot wait to see it!

The more they build the hype the more crap it is going to be… golden rule of advertising: If the film has serious doubts hide any information, build up the hype and pray to God that when it’s released in a huge number of theatres they can make their money back on the weekend opening beccause of the hype.
Trust me, it’s going to suck…
ps, sorry to be a downer on this, I wish it will be excellent to but given previous examples like this it is gonna be shite.

@ Milander - I don’t know… I tend to be a skeptic too, especially with all the garbage that seems to come out of Hollywood these days, but Cloverfield looks good.
From what I’ve read, we’ll get to see the monster - which is a big positive for me. I don’t think I could sit through a Blair Witch-styled monster movie.
I’ll definitely be going to see it. Luckily it comes out soon (1/18/08), so we don’t have too much longer to wait.

I’m gonna go see it, but not for the movie, theres supposed to be a Star Trek teaser in the trailers lol

If it works, great, if it doesn’t well… we’ll finally realise that Hollywood is just making Sci-Fi films for the fanboys and a quick buck - remember Hulk, spiderman 3, Doom, Alien vs Predator, Judge Dredd… they all had great potential but ultimately failed to impact on the mainstream and more’s the pity. Don’t even get me started on War of the Worlds (the tom cruise one) Jeeez that could have been fantastic if they’d followed the Jeff Wayne albums version.
Either way, fingers-crossed it all works out OK.

Oh yeah, here in Hungary I’ll probably have to wait another 12 months or more before it’s out in the cinema here (probably dubbbed the b**tards), or I’ll download it or if I’m feeling flush maybe buy it on amazon before it even gets in the cinema over here lol.

@ Tom Smith - ah, this makes sense since J.J. Abrams is directing the upcoming Star Trek movie and is the producer of Cloverfield. I’m surprised that they’ll have even a teaser ready in two weeks. Star Trek isn’t scheduled to be released until December 25th, 2008.
I’m starting to hear a little buzz regarding the upcoming Star Trek movie. Considering JJ’s recent track record with Alias and Lost (and hopefully, Cloverfield), Star Trek has a lot of potential as well. December 25th, 2008 is a long way away, though.
