Preview Alert: Star Wars: The Clone Wars

By Michael Lundberg | May 12, 2008

Clone WarsFinally, the full trailer and movie poster for Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been released. I’ve embedded the flash version below, but seriously, do yourself a favor and be sure to check out the Quicktime version in HD (found here in 480p and 720p) - it’s far superior to the flash version. When is someone going to create a way to embed Quicktime movies instead of low-quality Flash movies? But I digress…

If you’ll remember, this movie is meant to kick off a brand spanking new CGI-animated weekly television series on the Cartoon Network that allegedly will start in late 2008. It seems more likely that the series will start sometime in the Spring of 2009, but we’ll have to wait for the official announcement. Notice from the trailer that the movie features voices from Anthony Daniels (the original C3P0 actor) and Samuel Jackson (as Mace Windu), which is a nice surprise. Set between Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the movie looks to explain the story behind Jabba the Hutt’s hatred of the Jedi, which appears to have something to do with his son’s kidnap, orchestrated by the future emperor, and his rescue attempt by the Jedi. Let’s hope that there’s a little Boba Fett thrown in for good measure.

It’s still somewhat disappointing that the series is CGI-animated and not just animated. It seems like the CGI animation is lacking in some detail, which I’m assuming is necessary in order to meet the release demands of a weekly TV series. I wasn’t expecting detail on par with a Pixar movie, but come on, this is Lucasfilms! Also, it’s unfortunate that Genndy Tartakovsky isn’t involved in this incarnation, though it looks like they’ve tried to maintain the look and mood that he originally set in the Emmy award winning Clone Wars micro-series.

Looking for the poster? You can find it here. If you still haven’t seen the teaser trailer, you can find it below, too:
