New Video Alert: The Last of the Shadow Puppets

By Michael Lundberg | May 14, 2008

The Last of the Shadow PuppetsI’m probably the last person to discover this, but apparently, Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys, has a side project with Miles Kane of The Rascals. The band is called The Last of the Shadow Puppets and their debut album, The Age of the Understatement, was released this week in the US on Tuesday, May 6th, 2008. They’ve already released a video for the first single, which I’ve embedded below. Some articles suggest that they were influenced by early Bowie, but I don’t hear it in their first single, but then again, my Bowie exposure picks up around Ziggy Stardust. Maybe the rest of the album expands on that influence. The first song is really good, and I’m anxious to get my hands on the rest of the album. I’m not familiar with The Rascals (or their previous band The Little Flames), but if you like the Arctic Monkeys, then you’ll like The Last of the Shadow Puppets. It’s like Arctic Monkeys, but with another singer with an even thicker British accent.

In some ways I really dig side-projects like The Last of the Shadow Puppets, but it’s also a bit frustrating to invest in a new band, only to later discover that they may never tour or have any follow-up albums. It’s also a bit surprising that Kane, the lead singer of The Rascals, would get involved with a side project that might take away exposure from his main band, especially when you consider that The Rascals’ debut album comes out in a few weeks on June 9th, 2008.

At the end of the day, you don’t want to over analyze it. Good music is good music, so shut up, sit back and enjoy the video:

PS - while searching the net for some other information on the Shadow Puppets, I found this little story. File this under interesting but useless news of the day (and yes, I realize that this little nugget is just a tad bit old): Justin Timberlake is rumored to be interested in teaming up with the Arctic Monkeys. As you can tell from above, I totally dig the Arctic Monkeys and I think a collaboration with Justin Timberlake could have some interesting results, though I can’t quite imagine what a “danced-up” Arctic-JT combo would sound like. Whatever it is, it just better not take more than four minutes. I jest. Ok, so maybe I have the new Madonna album. So what? Talk is out amongst yourselves.
